How to extend the battery life of your laptop when there is no power

Some tips on how to extend the battery life of your laptop when there is no power

Some practical tips on how to extend the battery life of your laptop when there is no power:

  • Disconnect everything unnecessary connected to the laptop USB ports (except for flash drives). Mechanical external drives are especially active in power consumption.
  • Reduce the screen brightness to an acceptable minimum. This is done differently on different laptop models, but usually through the keyboard combination of Fn + key with a dim sun (usually on the F6 key).
  • Dim the screen whenever you are distracted from work or step away from the laptop. In Windows, you can set the time to automatically turn off the display when there is no user activity (StartControl PanelPower OptionsChange Plan SettingsTurn off the display:).
  • If the characters on the keyboard are visible, turn off the key backlight.
  • If there is no internet connection, turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and close all the applications that constantly check for connection because they will fail anyway:
    • browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc.);
    • email clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, The Bat!, etc.);
    • messengers (MS Teams, Telegram, Viber, etc.);
    • cloud service agents (Dropbox, Google Disc, OneDrive, etc.).
  • Close all unnecessary applications, especially those that run in the background.
  • Do not watch videos: decoding video files significantly increases processor load.
  • Find a way to recharge your laptop. For example, most modern laptops have a Type C socket and can be charged with a regular power bank. A fully charged power bank with a capacity of 20,000 mAh will extend your laptop’s battery life by 3 to 4 hours.
  • Remember to charge everything that can be charged when you have the chance. But do not leave these devices unattended, especially when the lights are back on. They may catch fire if the battery is damaged or the wrong voltage is fed into the mains.
