Useful information about file formats

As we already know, there is little point in archiving certain file formats because they do not compress well. On the other hand, some formats compress very efficiently:

Files that store plain text, including TXT and CSV.

Older Microsoft Office formats whose extensions do not end in X:

  • DOC, RTF (Word)
  • XLS (Excel)
  • PPT (PowerPoint)

Subtitle files, such as SRT, VTT, and similar formats.

XML files and formats based on XML:

  • XLIFF and its variations—XLF, MQXLIFF, SDLXLIFF, TXLF, TXML, MXLIFF
  • TMX
  • TBX

MDB (Microsoft Access database) and CAT tool database files based on it:

  • Trados Studio: SDLTB, SDLTM
  • SDL WorldServer Desktop Workbench (Idiom): WSPRJ, WSTD, WSTM

HTML, HTM, CHM
